The new Unit for 2024 sees a series of significant updates, most notable is the long carbon front handle, which now allows for effortless one-handed riding. The handle is strategically angled to enhance ergonomics and create a more natural riding position which reduces fatigue, particularly when riding toe-side. The new front handle allows riders to perform new tricks and experience a level of riding comfort that has to be experienced.
Additionally, designer Ken Winner has refined the outline, twist, and canopy tension of the MOD3 to improve power delivery and enhance the drift stability. When sheeted in, the 2024 Unit offers precise riding stability and smooth power, and when flagged out on the wave it delivers incredible drift stability.

I started wing foiling in 2021 coming from kite surfing and a bit of kite foiling previously. I loved the convenience of winging over kiting in many ways. Less string, more forgiving etc. But for packing down etc I always thought wings with booms were a pain! Kites always folded up small but the longer booms on wings seemed like a pain. My first wings then were easy to choose – same as my kites and with soft handles, Ozone Wasps. They were and still are great wings and I still have a crisp 4m that I ride.
Fast forward to early 2023 and I had started to learn to tack and try some different gybes. After sitting on the sofa, YouTube viewing and not doing and listening in on the local legend grapevine chatter, it seemed like handles were becoming a thing. And so it was on a windy day out in the harbour a friend loaned me a new 2023 Duotone Unit 5m to try.
At that time I was riding my 5m V2 Ozone Wasp so it’s only fair that the Unit was impressive from the start. Being a more modern design the power generation came easily with me pumping swiftly on to the foil versus my older Wasp. However, the real game changer for me were the handles. So much more control over the wing. I completed my first foiling tack in that session and was immediately sold. The front handle gave me lots of control and the tighter Mod 3 c4canopy let the wing float through the tack with less drag. I went on to change to a 5m and 6m Unit.
Having used both throughout 2023 I continue to be impressed. With the stiff boom-like handles the wing responds easily to rolling your wrists so you have another level of control when you need it. I often use this when exiting a tack or gybe to bring the wing back to where I want it. I’ve now upgraded to the 2024 model with the longer front handle and recently had the chance to use it extensively on vacation. I really liked the idea of this after seeing a winger with a full boom being able to rotate the whole wing one handed on the boom using a balance point of their choosing. I’m not doing that yet! However I do appreciate being able to find that balance point in that long front handle. I find it particularly nice on racing gybes at the moment. Now I can’t wait until my 6m arrives.
In conclusion – I might not be loving a pure boom yet, but boom like handles – feels like the best of both worlds to me! Can’t recommend the Units enough – David Williams
